SPHHP Outstanding Researchers of the Year

Each year the School of Public Health and Health Professions recognizes the research efforts of its faculty with the Junior Researcher award and the Senior Researcher award. Nominations for these awards will be considered annually. Awards will be made in years when one or more nominees meet the guidelines.

SPHHP Junior Researcher of the Year Award

Description

This award is presented to a faculty member whose recent research demonstrates relevance and importance to the overall mission of the School of Public Health and Health Professions. Eligible awardees must be full-time members of one of the School's departments/units who received their terminal degree within the past ten years and are untenured at the Assistant Professor level. A Junior Researcher Award may be received only once.

Nomination

Each Chair may nominate one person from his/her department for this award.  Individuals may self-nominate through their Chair as well.  A cover letter and recent CV must accompany the nomination.  The applications shall be considered by a Selection Committee composed of the Associate Dean for Research (who shall chair the researcher award aspect of the committee) and each department/unit Chair's designee.  The nominee's name (with nomination materials) will be forwarded to the Dean for final approval.

Criteria

This award recognizes an outstanding untenured researcher in the school whose recent work (last 1-5 years) has made significant contributions to his or her field, and also has the potential to improve the health of communities and individuals.  This may be indicated by a significant first-authored publication(s), a sustained record of tier-one publications over a 3 - 5 year period, extramural grant funding as a principal investigator (PI) or a sustained record of funding (e.g., a Co-Investigator on multiple grants) over a 3 - 5 year period.

SPHHP Senior Researcher of the Year Award

This award is presented to a faculty member whose recent research demonstrates relevance and importance to the overall mission of the School of Public Health and Health Professions. Eligible awardees must be full-time members of one of the School's departments/units and they must be at the Associate or Full Professor level.  The award recognizes outstanding performance during the past 1 to 3 years.  A recipient may receive the award multiple times, but not in consecutive years.

Nomination

Senior Faculty may nominate one person from the School for this award.  Individuals may self-nominate through their Chair or directly to the Associate Dean for Research.  In the case of multiple nominees from the same department, the Selection Committee will recommend one nominee to represent each department during a specific academic year.  A cover letter and recent CV must accompany the nomination.  The applications shall be considered by a Selection Committee composed of the Associate Dean for Research (who shall chair the researcher award aspect of the committee) and each department/unit Chair's designee.  The nominee's name (with nomination materials) will be forwarded to the Dean for final approval.

Criteria

This award recognizes an outstanding senior researcher in the school whose recent work (last 1 – 3 years) has made significant contributions to his or her field, and also has the potential to improve the health of communities and individuals. The researcher’s scholarship may have garnered public and/or professional accolades beyond the norm for other bodies of work in his or her research area or may reflect a sustained record of external grant funding at the national or international level.
