Project name: Assessing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Adequacy in Schools and Healthcare Facilities

Project goals: Globally, progress toward equitable access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in schools and healthcare facilities is monitored using infrastructure-based indicators. These measures, however, overlook users’ lived experiences. The Institutional WASH Insecurity Experiences (INWISE) Project seeks to develop and validate new experiential tools that capture whether WASH services meet the needs of students, patients and staff. Drawing on data from more than a dozen sites, the project also engages community partners to translate findings into actionable recommendations that advance health equity.

Project tasks: Students will:

  1. Clean and summarize survey data.
  2. Contribute to data visualization and dissemination.
  3. Coordinate with local partners to support new data collection in Western New York.
  4. Draft policy briefs that communicate findings to decision-makers and community members.

Duration of research experience: Summer, Fall

Time commitment: 6 to 10 hours
