What you need to know: deadlines and checklist

As a new student, you have questions about the requirements you need to complete and check off your to-do list. We've made it easy by compiling a list of need-to-know deadlines and requirements for the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS). Let's get started!

1. Application opens

 July 1 | Application opens.

2. Required prerequisites

  • General Anatomy
  • Gross Anatomy*
  • Biomechanics 300/400 level with lab
  • Chemistry I with lab
  • Chemistry II with lab
  • Physics I with lab
  • Physics II with lab
  • Statistics
  • Neuroscience* and Neuroanatomy
  • Human Physiology 300/400 level
  • College level Pre-Calculus or Calculus
  • Intro/Developmental or Abnormal Psychology 

UB applicants

  • ES 310 Practical Applications in Exercise Science and ES 381 Exercise Physiology Lab
  • UB Exercise Science students may choose one of the following courses for their PTCAS application, but must take all three courses for their ES degree: ES 300, ES 340 and ES 380

Non-UB applicants

  • Exercise Science course with lab that includes exercise testing and fitness evaluation (300/400 level).
  • Exercise Science course in exercise physiology or introduction to athletic injury (300/400 level).
  • *Gross Anatomy and Neuroscience can be taken at UB, the summer before entering the DPT program.
  • 3.0 GPA is required in the prerequisite courses. Minimum grade of C- in all prerequisite coursework.

3. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

TOEFL scores are required for all international applicants.

4. References

November 1 | References due.

  • Two references are required. One MUST be from a physical therapist.
  • Approved professional second reference can be from another physical therapist, professor in your major, professor from any other college course, a PTA, pre-PT advisor, health care professional or clergy.
  • References are not accepted from a teaching assistant, friend, family member, co-worker or anyone not listed on the approved list provided above.
  • References are confidential.

5. Volunteer hours

November 1, 40 hrs. | Required hours due.

  • Paid hours are accepted.
  • Hours must be completed within two years of applying.
  • Hours cannot be completed in more than two locations.
  • You no longer need to submit a volunteer form. You will submit the following information directly to PTCAS: Location of where you volunteered, the location address, phone number, the name of the supervising PT or volunteer coordinator, and email address of supervising PT or volunteer coordinator.

6. Complete the PTCAS application

7. Coursework

Input fall coursework as well as any intended future courses you will be taking in the winter and/or spring semesters in your PTCAS application under Academic History.

8. Checklist

Review the checklist to make sure you have submitted all of the components.

9. Application fee

Nov. 3 | $50 application fee due.

This fee is separate from the PTCAS application fee. When you submit your application, an email will follow with the application fee payment process.

10. Interview

Interviews will be held for applicants that have submitted all of the required application components.

There will be two cohorts for interviews:

The first cohort will be for those who submit their applications by Oct. 1.

The second cohort will be for those who submit their applications by Nov. 1.
