Susan Weng
Susan Weng is a current student in the Occupational Therapy (OT) program at the University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions.
How did you become interested in occupational therapy?
Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to work with people and be able to make a difference in their lives. When I was in high school, I looked up different types of public health professions and came across occupational therapy. Upon doing more research on the field I learned that an occupational therapist must be sensitive, compassionate, and understanding, which are characteristics that I respect and value. I decided that occupational therapy was a perfect fit for me because of the professions' holistic approach to health care.
Why did you choose UB?
The University at Buffalo stood out to me because of its five-year program for occupational therapy. It is also the perfect distance away from NYC (where I am from); enough to give me the freedom to experiment and make my own decisions. Additionally, I was really attracted to the diversity and the variety of clubs and organizations on campus. I only made two trips to campus prior to committing, but those trips were enough to expose me to the amazing atmosphere and sense of community that students experience at UB.
Tell us about your course work?
I truly believe that the OT program at UB sets students up for success. My time at the university has improved my ability to bond with other students and given me a diverse perspective. The courses and curriculum in the program are helping me build a foundation to which I can either continue my education or become an entry level OT upon graduation. While courses such as Functional Anatomy, Medical Conditions and Neurorehabilitation Across the lifespan are challenging, I have been given many opportunities to use and apply my knowledge in both fieldwork and group projects.
What have you enjoyed the most?
The OT program connected me to some of the kindest and most genuine people that I have ever met. I love that I am able to work with other future health care professionals. Not only do they inspire me, but they continuously teach me new things everyday as well. What is especially unique to this program is that I can gain experience through fieldwork placements. With that, I am able to explore multiple fields and gain an insight on what I enjoy most.
How will receiving a degree from the UB set you apart?
A degree from the University at Buffalo will not just help me find a job, it will give me recognition. UB emphasizes and teaches professionalism while setting challenges to prepare me for my future. I will have the expertise to excel and succeed in the future as an occupational therapist.
