Abstract: The Women's Health Initiative Sight Exam Study (WHI-SE) is an ancillary study to the Women's Health Initiative Hormone Replacement Clinical Trial that assessed whether HT could prevent or delay the onset of macular degeneration. The study began in September of 2000.
The Buffalo WHI-SE Principal Investigator is Jean Wactawski-Wende, PhD. Co-Investigators are Lynne Pace, MD, James D. Reynolds, MD and Maurizio Trevisan, MD, MS. There are 18 centers across the country conducting this study. Women who were currently participating in the Women's Health Initiative Hormone Therapy Clinical Trials were invited to join the WHI-SE. National Enrollment is complete with approximately 4,350 participants enrolled in WHI-SE nationwide. The Buffalo WHI-SE enrolled 231 participants. Due to the early termination of the WHI HT trials, funding for this study was discontinued and no second eye examination was conducted. Baseline data does exist and may be published in the future.
