Director, Office of Statistics for Doctoral Research

Lesley Georger.

Lesley Georger, PhD, a native of Western New York, received her BA in mathematics from Canisius College in 2001 and her PhD in statistics from the University of Rochester in 2007. Prior to joining the University at Buffalo in 2024, she was a Professor of Mathematics at D’Youville University, where she had been a faculty member since 2006. Georger has also served as a biostatistician at the Center for Health Behavior Research at D’Youville University and as a biostatistical consultant for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sisters of Charity Hospital. Her research interests span from statistical analysis in the health sciences to educational methodologies in statistics.

As an educator, Georger is passionate about fostering an inclusive and collaborative learning environment, adapting her teaching methods to accommodate diverse student needs and learning styles. Her teaching interests focus on making statistics accessible and relevant across disciplines, particularly within health sciences professions.

William Tanberg

William Tanberg, MS, originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, earned his Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from the University of Minnesota in 2008 and his Master of Science in Mathematics and Statistics from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2020. He is currently completing his Master of Arts in Biostatistics at the University at Buffalo, where he has provided statistical support to residents and dental students in the School of Dental Medicine’s Department of Orthodontics over the past three years. His statistical analyses have been instrumental in award-winning research projects presented at the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) conference and published in orthodontic and dentistry journals.

Tanberg brings 12 years of educational experience, spanning high school through undergraduate levels, in subjects including mathematics, statistics, biology, chemistry, and physics. He has taught in one-on-one, online, and classroom settings, tailoring his instruction to students’ skill levels and learning styles to build their confidence and foster success. His students describe him as passionate, caring, and deeply committed to their academic growth. Tanberg is dedicated to applying his expertise in biostatistics to supporting students and researchers in achieving their academic and professional goals.

Douglas Landsittel, PhD

Doug Landsittel, PhD, earned his BS in Applied Mathematics (1992) and PhD in Biostatistics (1997) from the University of Pittsburgh, where he also served as the Associate Director for the Biostatistics Facility of the Cancer Institute (now Hillman Cancer Center) and the Associate Director for the Center for Research on Healthcare Data Center, as well as the Director of Biostatistics (for Research) for the Starzl Transplant Institute, and the Lead Methodologist for the Comparative Effectiveness Research Center. He also served as a Team Leader, Acting Branch Chief, Senior Statistician, and Senior Fellow across three different Divisions/Labs of the CDC National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Before joining the University at Buffalo (in February, 2024), he was the Department Chair of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the James A. Caplin, M.D. Chair in Evidence-Based Medicine for the School of Public Health, Indiana University-Bloomington.
