Centers and Facilities

Each department within the School of Public Health and Health Professions has its own discipline-specific research facilities as well as access to shared resources.

The Department of Biostatistics has an office in the Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences on UB’s Downtown Medical Campus.

The Department of Biostatistics has an office in the Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences on UB’s Downtown Medical Campus.

Offices

Our department has two office locations:

  • The seventh floor of Kimball Tower on UB’s South Campus
  •  The offices are located in Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center which facilitates collaborations with the cancer center, Statistical & Data Center and CoE researchers. The downtown offices may be reached conveniently via the UB Shuttle, the Metrorail or 15-minute car drive.

Students are located at both sites depending on research assistantship duties.

The Buffalo Clinical Translational Research Center (CTRC) provides quality biostatistical, epidemiological and research design support to investigators in the Buffalo Translational Consortium (BTC). We provide support for all stages of T1 through T4 research through consultation, teaching, collaboration and methodological research.

Computer Lab

computer lab.

The computer lab in Cary 235 is maintained by the School of Public Health and Health Professions. Classes may be held throughout the semester, otherwise the lab is open for general student use (assignments, software access, printing, email, etc.). The lab is open to all faculty and students.

Center for Health Research

The Center for Health Research (CHR) is a full-service research facility available to all School of Public Health and Health Professions faculty conducting externally funded studies.

The CHR includes:

  • A reception room/waiting area
  • Six interview rooms, four of which are ventilated to accommodate smoking cessation research
  • Two multi-purpose rooms
  • A meeting/kitchen area
  • A phlebotomy room

University at Buffalo Shared Facilities

Center for Computational Research

Faculty members and their research assistants have access to the Center for Computational Research (CCR), a leading academic supercomputing facility. CCR maintains a high-performance computing environment, high-end visualization laboratories, and support staff with expertise in computing, visualization and networking.

Health Sciences Library

The Health Sciences Library (HSL), founded in 1846, provides services to meet the information needs of the instructional, research and clinical programs in the UB schools of Public Health and Health Professions, Dental Medicine, Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The library’s primary collections include more than 1,500 current journals, 121,000 books, and more than 1,300 e-journals, e-serials and databases linked from the HSL website. UB Document Express is available to students, faculty and staff located on one campus who need materials from UB libraries on another campus.  Through the Information Delivery Service, the library can also obtain photocopies or loans of journal articles, books or audiovisuals that are not available in UB libraries.

The library currently has several biostatistics and statistics journal subscriptions, including:

  • Journal of the American Statistical Association
  • Annals of Statistics, Biometrics
  • Biometrika
  • JRSS-B
  • Statistical Science
  • Statistics in Medicine

Specific to the biostatistics program we have access to:

  • JSTOR
  • The Current Index to Statistics,
  • Journals@Ovid Full Text
  • MathSciNet
  • MEDLINE
  • Science Citation Index
  • Web of Science

Subject databases include:

  • FACTS.com

Our department also has an endowment from which to purchase biostatistics textbooks each year.

Resources for Conducting Patient-Centered Comparative Effectiveness and Biomarker Research

This group and others have developed educational resources for patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR), causal inference methods and other general educational resources in statistics, biomarkers and epidemiology.
