Harold Burton Study Abroad Assistance Award

This award is made possible through the generous gift of UB Professor Harold Burton.

Overview Application

Selection criteria

Preference will be given to:

  • Students with financial need
  • Students with an overall GPA of > 3.2 at the time of application
  • Students who have selected this program to enhance their current academic program
  • Students who will return to UB for at least one semester after completion of the program
  • First-time study abroad participants
  • Students enrolled in (but not limited to) the following health-related majors: Public Health; Pre-medicine; Nursing/pre-Nursing; Occupational Therapy; areas in the social sciences that emphasize behavior modification for the prevention and management of chronic disease.

Award guidelines

  • Applications will be reviewed by a SPHHP Awards Committee.
  • The award decision of the committee is final and not subject to appeal.
  • Recipients of the award will be asked to help promote study abroad programs that focus on global health upon their return.

A complete application includes

  • An unofficial transcript
  • A personal statement that includes an explanation or description of:
    • Your financial need
    • Your leadership experience
    • Why you found this particular program intriguing or interesting.
    • How this study will enhance your career path, including your personal and professional development
    • Prior experience with studying, traveling or living in another country (if applicable).
    • Life experiences you think will enhance your participation in this type of experiential learning environment.
  • Please indicate whether or not you have either received, applied for, or intend to apply for another scholarship or assistance award

Application deadline

Applications are due by 4:00 p.m. October 4 and can be sent as an email attachment to Jillian Szafranski or delivered in person to Room 419 Kimball Tower, UB South Campus.

Announcement of awards

Awards will be announced by October 18.
