Field Training Guidance

Schedule your field training after you complete most of your foundational coursework – typically after the second semester – and completed all prerequisites to move forward with an experience. You begin preparing for field training at least three months prior to your anticipated start date.

Field training can occur in the fall, spring, or summer.

3 Months Before Field Training

Some field training sites will require that students have their own health insurance in order to intern with them. 

1 Month Before Field Training

  • Once an agency is identified, register for your field training course (CHB/EEH/STA 544 for 3 credits) in the semester in which you will complete your hours. Please note that students completing a summer experience will pay summer tuition and fees.
  • Students review the field training course syllabus and field training course requirements, and complete field training placement forms through their CHB/EEH/STA 544 course in UB Learns.

At the End of Field Training

Students evaluate their placement, and site supervisors evaluate students, through forms in the UB Learns field training course. Students also submit a PowerPoint slide set of their experience, which qualifies the student for the Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP) Healthcare Practice Digital Badge.

LinkedIn profiles represent professional profiles. Organizations where students complete their field training experiences may also view students’ LinkedIn profiles, and we ask that students please keep their profiles professional. If you would like assistance setting up or maintaining a professional LinkedIn profile, please contact UB’s Career Design Center.

  • Review field training information and list of MPH field training sites on the School of Public Health and Health Professions Field Training website.
  • Prepare your resume for submission to field training agencies by meeting with a UB Career Design Center counselor.
  • Complete the Field Training prepatory course and INFO form, (in the UB Learns MPH Portal) identifying your interests, at least one semester before your field training experience.
  • Discuss possible placement options with the MPH field training coordinator. who will identify a potential placement with you and facilitate an interview between you and the agency.*
