    Dan Stapleton, public health director of the Niagara (N.Y.) County Health Department has been named Leader of the Year by Leadership Niagara. He is an adjunct faculty member in SPHHP's Undergraduate Public Health program.

Tobacco-related health disparities are a pressing issue in the area of tobacco prevention and cessation.

George W. Thorn Award PHILIP SMITH, PhD '13, MS '13, MS '09 Smith is a tenure-track assistant professor in Miami University’s Department of Kinesiology and Health. His research addresses health inequities resulting from tobacco use and the health risks of vaping. He also serves as an associate editor on the Editorial Board for Nicotine and Tobacco Research.

Smith, PhD '13, receives the George W. Thorn award, given to UB alumni under 40, for his outstanding contributions to public health.

Students making their mark

LIndsay Mattick.

Lindsey Mattick recently had a paper accepted by the journal Cancer Causes and Control based on work she conducted in Tanzania. Mattick’s research interest is cancer epidemiology in special populations.

Jennifer Mongiovi was the first author on a paper accepted by The Journal of Nutrition: “Glycemic Index, Glycemic Load and Risk of Ovarian Cancer in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cohort.”
