Biosample Study

The goal of the biosample study was to estimate current low-level exposures to chemicals such as benzene or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

  • All participants in the survey were invited to donate biospecimens.
  • Blood, urine, and saliva were collected.
  • Levels of PAHs, benzenes, and select other pollutants were assessed in the samples.
  • Individuals who donated a biospecimen were invited to submit a second sample.
  • There presently/currently is no precise way to know, for sure, how much of the chemicals released in coke oven emissions are in your body.
  • In total, 3,019 biospecimens have been provided. Biospecimen collection has ended.
