Biosample Study

The goal of the biosample study was to estimate current low-level exposures to chemicals such as benzene or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

All participants in the survey were invited to donate biospecimens.
Blood, urine, and saliva were collected.
Levels of PAHs, benzenes, and select other pollutants were assessed in the samples.
Individuals who donated a biospecimen were invited to submit a second sample.
There presently/currently is no precise way to know, for sure, how much of the chemicals released in coke oven emissions are in your body.
In total, 3,019 biospecimens have been provided. Biospecimen collection has ended.
