Our Team

Kyler Knapp, PhD, is a public health researcher specializing in substance use disorder and recovery. Knapp’s research examines the dynamic intra-individual processes that contribute to psychological well-being and positive health behavior change among individuals in recovery from alcohol and other substance use disorders. Using advanced quantitative methods and ambulatory technology (e.g., ecological momentary assessment [EMA]), Knapp identifies social and emotional risk and protective factors experienced in daily life that can be targeted by interventions to help improve well-being and reduce problematic substance use behaviors during substance use recovery.

Sara is currently a research support specialist in the Department of Community Health and Health Behavior. Sara has worked on the UB Alcohol Use Change and Daily Life Experiences Study since December 2025. Sara's research interests include substance use, especially in emerging young adults, reproductive healthcare access, and health education.

Austin is a PhD student in the Department of Community Health and Health Behavior. Advised by Dr. Kyler Knapp, he has been a RA in the REAL Lab since August 2025. Austin's research interests include the use of advanced quantitative methodology alongside digital health interventions to address alcohol-related problems and strengthen recovery outcomes.

Zoe is a graduate student pursuing a dual Master of Public Health and Master of Social Work degree. Since joining Dr. Knapp’s research in June 2025, she has supported both pilot and grant funded projects related to alcohol use change and well-being. Zoe enjoys gaining hands-on experience with study implementation and participant interaction. 

Claire is a Master of Public Health student with a concentration in Community Health and Health Behavior. She joined Dr. Knapp’s research lab as an RA in the summer of 2026 and contributes to ongoing projects focused on alcohol use and well-being. Claire is interested in research surrounding emotional wellness and health behavior. She is excited to gain experience in study implementation and public health research methods.

Joenardie is from Queens, NY, and a proud University at Buffalo graduate, having earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in Public Health. Her research interests center on maternal health, with a focus on improving outcomes for women and families.

Aubrey graduated from UB in May of 2026 with her Bachelor of Science in Public Health, summa cum laude. Aubrey became involved in the lab's systematic review on alcohol use disorder and well-being in December of 2024, and has remained active on the research team since. In April of 2026, she presented the lab's preliminary findings and research plan at UB's Celebration of Academic Excellence Student Showcase. Post-graduation, Aubrey is employed at the Albany Med Health System, where she works in a clinical setting while pursuing a career as a physician assistant (PA).
