Abstract: This cluster randomized trial will determine the impact of a hand washing promotion program on maternal hand washing behavior during the neonatal period in Meru County, Kenya. Clinic-based health care workers and community health volunteers will be trained to promote hand washing with soap to pregnant women and other caregivers of the newborn using an interactive storytelling approach and addressing barriers to hand washing at the participant's homes.
