Advance your training in statistical theory, methods and applications.
The MS program in Biostatistics and Bioinformatics provides you with the skills you need to analyze data from genetics/bioinformatics settings. Through the MS program, you will be well-suited to pursue PhD programs that offer a blend of computer science, bioinformatics and data science such as UB’s PhD in computational and data-enabled science and engineering. The degree also provides training in statistical methods and applications, as well as bioinformatics. Students will complete a practical training project.
International students: This qualifies as a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program, which provides an additional 24 months Optional Practical Training (OPT) for F-1 visa holders who begin the program in fall 2021 or later. For more information, visit the Department of Homeland Security Study in the States website or UB's International Student Services Office.
You will have numerous opportunities to work closely with faculty members on methodological, theoretical and applied research projects. You will also work with departments and schools throughout the university, as well as our community partners, including Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Gynecological Oncology Group.
As a graduate, you will be prepared for pursuing a PhD degree* or for direct entry into the workplace in a variety of positions, including as a:
Our graduates are currently employed at Georgetown University Medical Center, University of Pittsburgh, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Baystate Medical Center, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and BlueCross BlueShield among others.
*If you are interested in pursuing a PhD in biostatistics, please note that you will need the MA degree in biostatistics. The Bioinformatics and Biostatistics MS program is appropriate for other PhD programs, but not UB's PhD in biostatistics.
