International Admissions

International students: This qualifies as a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program, which provides an additional 24 months Optional Practical Training (OPT) for F-1 visa holders who begin the program in fall 2021 or later. For more information, visit the Department of Homeland Security Study in the States website or UB's International Student Services Office.

Apply Online

Apply online to the PhD program through the graduate school website. The online application is fast, easy and secure. A $50 non-refundable fee is required.

Deadlines

Apply by April 15 for fall semester admission; the deadline for applying for fellowships and assistantships is Jan. 15.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in statistics or biostatistics from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • GRE scores are not required and will not be considered

International applicants must demonstrate understanding of English as shown by one of the following:

  • Minimum PTE Academic score of 55 will be required with no individual section below 50. In addition, we now accept the Cambridge English Advanced (CEA) and the Cambridge English Proficiency (CEP) tests. The minimum University requirement for both of these new tests is 185 overall on the new scoring scale.
  • Minimum TOEFL scores of 600 for the rPDT paper-based test; 79 for the Internet-based test (our department prefers closer to 100); IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5;  the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) scores with a minimum score of 55; or Duolingo English Test (DET) with a minimum of 120.
  • If you have completed a degree program in the United States and have a TOEFL score (or similar) that meets the minimum University at Buffalo requirements as cited above, you may submit a copy of that TOEFL score for a waiver of the TOEFL exam for this degree program.

Additional Requirements

  • A strong background in mathematics or statistics
  • At least three semesters of advanced calculus
  • One semester of statistics is recommended

Supplemental Materials

Before you submit your online application, ensure that you have all of the supplemental materials ready.

With your online application, you will be able to upload transcripts, your resume and personal statement. Three letters of reference will be requested through the e-mail addresses of the recommenders.
