Financial support opportunities for master's and PhD students.
Established in 2005 to honor Robert O’Shea, PhD, associate professor emeritus and first director of graduate studies in the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health from 1977 to 1997.
Since funds for student travel are limited, students are highly encouraged to submit for approval of the Robert O’Shea Travel Award prior to submitting an abstract to a conference.
Please note that receipt of the award is contingent on both the quality of scientific work and availability of departmental funds. Rules for abstract submission described above apply.
Important: Students who receive the award will be provided with information regarding UB travel guidelines and the travel reimbursement process by an EEH department administrator, which includes obtaining official pre-approval for travel BEFORE making travel arrangements. It is the awardee’s responsibility to familiarize themselves with the policies and processes, receive travel pre-approval, and submit travel expenses for reimbursement. The department cannot cover items such as tax, liquor or upgrades (hotel, air, transportation). Failure to follow travel guidelines may result in expenses not being reimbursed. Questions regarding travel guidelines should be directed to an EEH department administrator prior to incurring expenses.
Funding is NOT guaranteed and depends on availability of funds in the Department and the number of requests received in any one year.
The Office of Global Health Initiatives (OGHI) offers funding for UB School of Public Health and Health Professions’ (SPHHP) students interested in interacting with public health initiatives and services in resource-poor settings in the United States or in a global setting. These awards are made possible in part by generous support from OGHI Founding Director Dr. Arthur Goshin.
Preferably, applicants propose collaborating with a SPHHP faculty member on a project with global health significance. Application to the program will be competitive and will be based on the submission of the following required items:

All fellows are involved in interdisciplinary research, working with a mentor in epidemiology and in a second field of research. Fellows receive a stipend and funds for tuition, research and related activities and items (attendance at scientific meetings, memberships, books, etc.). Students are generally accepted into the training program at the end of their first year of study. Learn more about UB’s cancer epidemiology fellowships by contacting Terri Raimondo at traimond@buffalo.edu or 716-829-5363.
Fellowships funded by an NCI R25T training grant are available for qualified students in the cancer epidemiology track within the PhD program.
Grantees are provided a stipend of $22,000 for each of two years, with tuition and, as available, funds for research work or travel to conferences. Grantees are expected to complete coursework in microbiology, as well as research ethics. Doctoral students working on dissertation-related research on infectious diseases are eligible to apply. Learn more by contacting Pavani Kalluri Ram, MD, at pkram@buffalo.edu.
The microbial pathogenesis training grant is funded by the National Institute for AIDS and Infectious Diseases and is administered by UB’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
Funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), training fellowships are available for qualified, full-time master’s students interested in a multidisciplinary training approach to advance occupational safety and health practice in Western New York.
