Admissions

Domestic students: The deadline for admission is July 15. You must submit all application materials, including letters of recommendation, transcripts and transcript evaluations (if applicable) by this date.

International students: The deadline for admission is March 1. You must submit all application materials, including letters of recommendation, transcripts and transcript evaluations (if applicable) by this date.

UB PharmD students applying to the MPH should apply by Jan. 31.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

• Domestic students, priority will be given to applications submitted up to Dec. 1.

Students are evaluated based on all materials submitted and will be considered in the context of all of their accomplishments.

GRE scores are not required and will not be considered.

• A bachelor’s degree
• A GPA of 3.0 or above
• Personal Statement
  • Please ensure your statement is unique to the University at Buffalo and includes the name of the MPH concentration to which you are applying
  • The statement should be a narrative that describes your:
    • Education and experience
    • Interest in public health
    • Interest in the specific MPH concentration area
    • Interest in the University at Buffalo
    • Career goals
    • Applicants are also encouraged to:   
      • Discuss their interest in health equity and/or Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the field of public health
      • Describe how their training will contribute to health equity/ DEI in public health. 
• Contact information for a minimum of two references 
  • Applicants are encouraged to select references who served as faculty or instructors of courses previously taken, or faculty who advised or worked directly with the student previously. For applicants without recent college experience, professional references are allowable.
  • References will be asked to provide a letter of recommendation for the applicant.
• The following are highly recommended:
  • One general biology course
  • One health-related science course (e.g., nutrition, anatomy, microbiology or physiology)
  • Two courses in behavioral sciences, including a course in sociology or social psychology, and a course in subjects such as sociology, anthropology, psychology, political science or economics
  • Statistics or other quantitative coursework. Applicants should have a B or higher in related coursework. 
• Supplemental materials  
  • Domestic applicants with degrees earned outside the United States are encouraged to submit a WES evaluation with their application. Applicants may be asked to provide a WES evaluation if the admissions team is unable to evaluate academic credentials based upon official transcripts submitted. 

Additional requirements for international applicants:

• English proficiency as demonstrated by one of the following (use School 2925; School of Public Health and Health Professions to submit scores):
  • Minimum TOEFL scores of 550 for the rPDT paper-based test, 79 for the Internet-based test, or 8.5 for the TOEFL Essentials test; IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5
    
  • Duolingo English Test (DET) with a minimum of 120
  • Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) Minimum scoring on Old Scoring Scale 65 Overall, 185 overall on New Scoring Scale
  • Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) Minimum scoring on Old Scoring Scale 60 Overall, 185 overall on New Scoring Scale
  • International students whose transcripts are not from a US accredited-based institution are required to submit a third-party evaluation. Applicants can submit these evaluations through SOPHAS, using the World Education Service (Wes). Wes is the preferred third-party evaluator for international transcripts. If applicants are unable to secure a Wes Evaluation, they should reach out to the admissions team for permission to submit an alternative NACES  accredited transcript evaluation. These requests should be sent to keenangi@buffalo.edu and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. 
  • Supplemental materials
    • Submit the biographical page of your passport
    • Complete the International Applicant Financial Form, and provide an original official bank statement as documentation to meet UB requirements
