Building Something Bigger

Sirawar Matin is connecting the dots through a community hub for healing on Buffalo’s East Side.

Wearing Countless Hats

For Sirawar Matin, moving to Buffalo and enrolling at UB wasn’t just a major life decision—it was the turning point that reshaped everything. “The single best decision,” he says, because it set him on a path not only to a career, but to a calling.

He arrived at UB expecting to become a physical therapist. Instead, he graduated having worn countless hats—physical therapy, real estate, real estate development, and even urban planning. UB, he says, taught him how to harness resources, expand his skill set, and think beyond a traditional career path. It showed him that seemingly separate fields could come together for a purpose much bigger than himself.

That purpose is now crystal clear: building a community-centered physical therapy hub on Buffalo’s East Side. The idea began when he spotted a plot of land that sparked a vision. When he shared his dream with his mother, she offered to sell a small piece of land she owned back in Bangladesh so he could buy this one. That sacrifice, he says, became the foundation of everything he hopes to build here.

Making Connections

As a practicing physical therapist, Matin sees first-hand how socio-economic barriers limit access to care. For many communities, especially those on the lower end of the income spectrum, physical therapy isn’t a readily available benefit. His goal is to change that by creating an accessible, empowering, and culturally grounded space offering care, movement, and healing.

He knows he isn’t a trained urban planner or a lifelong real estate developer. But UB taught him that the pieces connect—that big, meaningful projects draw on collaboration, education, and community support. And he’s now calling on that community, on grant funders, and on anyone who shares his belief in elevating the East Side to help make this vision a reality.

“We have work to do,” he says. And thanks to UB, he’s ready for it.
