Courtney L. Gallagher, DI, MS

Courtney L. Gallagher.

As a competitive athlete throughout high school and a Division I lacrosse player at Cornell University, Courtney L. Gallagher learned that better nutrition equated to stronger athletic performance and achievements.

“After seeing the impact that nutrition had on my own athletic career, I knew I wanted to work with other athletes to teach them the critical role nutrition plays in their success and health, as well as to help them reach their full potential,” she said. “I felt that becoming a registered dietitian and working with athletes would be a perfect way to combine my passion for nutrition and sports.”

After earning a bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Sciences from Cornell University where she was a member of the Women's Lacrosse team, Gallagher attended UB for its ACEND-accredited dietetic internship.

“The dietetic internship has was a wonderful experience,” she said. "I learned so much during those rotations and really enjoyed working in the fast-paced hospital setting and interacting with different members of the health care team to provide the best care possible for the patients. A number of my other rotations were in the community setting, I worked with a dietitian in the Buffalo Public School system and with health care providers at the Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center. These rotations were great learning experiences and it was very rewarding to be able to give back to the local community.  Overall, the dietitians I worked with during my internship were great mentors and more than willing to help further my education in dietetics."

Gallagher graduated from the DI program in August 2014 and graduated with her Master's in Nutrition in May 2015. During her second year of graduate school, she worked closely with a number of the University at Buffalo athletic teams providing sports nutrition support. This experience helped prepare her for her current position at the University of Georgia, where she is working as a sports dietitian in the Athletic Association. She is looking forward to continue her career in sports nutrition for many years to come.
