International Admissions

International students: This qualifies as a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program, which provides an additional 24 months Optional Practical Training (OPT) for F-1 visa holders who begin the program in fall 2021 or later. For more information, visit the Department of Homeland Security Study in the States website or UB's International Student Services Office.

Apply online to the MS program. The online application is fast, easy and secure. A $50 non-refundable fee is required.

Application Deadline

  • March 1 to be considered for fall semester
  • Aug. 15 to be considered for spring semester

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work.
  • Minimum TOEFL scores of 213 for computer-based tests; 550 for the paper test and 79 for the IBT test (Reading: 19, Listening: 15, Speaking: 19, Writing: 19). As an alternative to TOEFL, UB also accepts Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) scores to satisfy the English language proficiency requirement. A minimum PTE Academic score of 55 is required, with no individual section sub-score below 50. PTE Academic scores must be dated within two years of the time the application is reviewed by UB’s Office of International Admissions.

Supplemental Materials

Before you submit your application, ensure that you have all of the supplemental materials ready.

  • You will need to submit a copy of your biographical page (with picture) from your passport.
  • Applicants to the MS thesis option must interview with an ENS faculty member before their application is accepted. The interview may be conducted by telephone, online or in person. It is intended to determine if the faculty member can provide the mentorship and facilities required for successful completion of research on a thesis topic desired by the applicant. Applicants to the MS thesis option may be accepted to the Comprehensive Exam option if the interview does not occur.
  • Secure two recommendation forms from individuals who have worked closely with you and have considerable knowledge of your academic performance.
  • Request that your official transcripts from each college or university you have attended are sent to the department.
  • Request that your GRE scores are sent to the department.
    When requesting your GRE scores, use these reporting codes: Institution 2925; Department 0214
  • Request that your official TOEFL scores are sent to the department.
    When requesting your TOEFL scores, use these reporting codes: Institution 2925; Department 77
  • Include a statement of career objectives and plans listing your area of concentration and research interests. This section is very important in the application process; complete with as much detail as possible.
