ENS AI Policy

Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences MS and PhD program’s Policy on AI use in Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Permitted uses

  • AI use is permitted for creating figures.
  • AI use is permitted for formatting.
  • Students and mentors are expected to collaborate on manuscript creation. When AI tools have been used, submission should be limited to journals that explicitly permit AI-assisted content, which will accordingly govern eligibility for inclusion in the thesis or dissertation.

All edits and revisions to theses, dissertations and capstone projects must be documented using track changes in Microsoft Word or equivalent, so that all modifications remain visible and attributable.

Non-Permitted Uses

AI may not be used for data interpretation or content creation. Violation of this expectation constitutes a violation of the graduate school Academic Integrity policy.

Faculty mentors and/or program directors who believe a student is in violation will follow the graduate school policies for academic integrity violations.

The thesis or dissertation committee plays a central role in overseeing AI use and may:

  • Set additional restrictions or permissions regarding AI tools.
  • Require additional documentation or disclosure of AI-assisted activities.
  • Evaluate whether AI use aligns with scholarly goals of the project.
