Female Energy Expenditure during Marching

Female Energy Expenditure during Marching

Why? Predicting how much energy Warfighters use and when they will become exhausted has been completed almost exclusively for males. Differences in physical performance capabilities, body composition, how the body regulates temperature during work, and metabolism may cause different responses in females Warfighters, who are serving in combat roles in greater numbers than before. Sex differences in the energy needs of Warfighter tasks are additional problems that must be addressed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine energy needs during fatiguing Warfighter tasks in a variety of environments.

Who? Physically active females ages 18-39 years old.

What? We expect that you will be in this research study for 23 hours, spread out over 8 visits. The first visit (2 hours) will be for explaining the study, and completing a military entrance physical exam. The second visit (1.5 hours) will familiarize you with study procedures and establishing a baseline for the injury risk and performance tests. During Visits 3-8 (3.25 hours each) you will walk on a treadmill at varying speeds in a different environmental while sometimes carrying and sometimes not carrying a weighted backpack which will hold 33% of your body weight, and complete injury risk and performance tests.

Where? Sherman Annex on UB South Campus (Main St and Bailey Ave)

When? We try to work around your availability, generally scheduling between 7am and 5pm on weekdays.

Who can participate?

Each study has its own set of criteria of who can participate, depending on the specific research question.  In general, most of our studies are looking for participants who are generally healthy and willing to come to our laboratory and exercise or rest in different environments. Please email Dr. Riana Pryor (rpryor@buffalo.edu) to determine if you are eligible to participate in our studies.

Do you qualify for our studies?

We're happy to answer questions about our participation in our studies, student hands-on research and learning opportunities, and the implementation of health and safety prevention and intervention strategies in physically active populations. Email Riana Pryor at RPryor@buffalo.edu.
