Edward (Ed) Gannon, PhD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Clinical Director of Strength and Conditioning at the University at Buffalo, where he leads the clinical components of the MS in Strength and Conditioning and is involved in the development of Performance Science teaching within the graduate program in Exercise Science. His work focuses on evidence-based strength and conditioning in high-performance sport, integrating training methods with athlete monitoring, load management, and return-to-play strategies.
With over 20 years of experience in professional sport in the UK and US, Dr. Gannon previously served as Director of Physical Performance and Head Strength Coach for the Buffalo Sabres and Rochester Americans, leading multidisciplinary teams responsible for athlete preparation, recovery, and injury risk management. He also spent 10 years in professional rugby union with Leicester Tigers, Gloucester Rugby, and London Wasps, specializing in strength, power, speed, and energy system development for elite domestic and international athletes.
At the University at Buffalo, he develops clinical training sites, supports graduate experiential learning, and integrates performance technology into athlete development. He earned his PhD from the University of Bath, focusing on strategies for monitoring and training strength and power in elite athletes.
