Hayden Hess earned his PhD in 2020 at the University at Buffalo where his research focus was diving and hyperbaric physiology. This was followed by a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at Indiana University–Bloomington in integrative physiology. There, he trained in thermal and renal physiology with a particular focus on the risk of developing acute kidney injury during occupational heat stress and extreme heat events. He is currently a principal investigator in the Center for Research and Education in Special Environments (CRESE).
